Learn from our customer success story at Siemens in the UK

Digitalisation and Industry 4.0 have become even more relevant since the start of the current global pandemic: in a modern industrial environment, machines need to be able to communicate with each other and to the outside world in order to receive necessary updates and business critical maintenance. Especially in times where travel or access to a premise is highly restricted, allowing remote access to industrial sites is essential

How to manage a third-party access to a highly secure environment in a controlled way?

A remote access should not interfere with the production schedule, has to enforce the company’s security policies and to be transparent. Siemens chose to use a unique secure connectivity platform to allow remote access to its manufacturing facility in Congleton, UK. The industrial machines involved in the production of around +500,000 electric motor drives a year, to be later integrated in all sorts of products ranging from washing machines to baggage handling and till rollercoasters, were in safe hands.

Fast forward almost two years with the WL Digital Doorman implementation at the core of the Siemens Congleton plant to grant, monitor and document all incoming and outgoing connections onto the shop floor. It’s keeping the door open, however prepared to close it at any time by immediately terminating all the connections at once, thanks to its red-button functionality, if a security breach is suspected or the production needs to run undisturbed.

"High availability of the shop floor and Cybersecurity have always been for me central points of concern. Thanks to WL Digital Doorman, we have not only managed to contribute to a high overall equipment efficiency and save significantly in travel costs for service engineers, who are now able to do their work remotely. But we’ve at the same time managed to raise the already strong overall security and safety standards onto the next level. That provides us with an outstanding ROI, while keeping both humans and machines away from virus-threats. We feel safer thanks to the Worldline’s IIoT solution.” says Rob Lee, Siemens Congleton Infrastructure Manager and Information Security Ambassador.

WL Digital Doorman’s aim is to respond to one of the central challenges of the digital transformation in the context of Industry 4.0 - the challenge of connectivity. Supporting the Zero Trust principles, it is able to meet the large number of high security requirements for industrial plants and other critical infrastructures. Find out more about the solution, selected features and use cases in the WL Digital Doorman brochure.
